Asbestos Exposure Risk Following Earthquakes

A natural disaster such as an eartquake or tornado is devastating, but the long term health of those involved and emergency reponders, military personnel and anyone helping to pick up the pieces could be put further at risk due to exposure to asbestos. This is due to asbestos products becoming airborne and being inhaled, greatly increasing the chances of developing related diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer later in life. It is not known yet how many asbestos claims will be brought, but the health concerns are valid.
It doesn’t have to be a major natural event to cause damage to propery, the advice to stay safe if you find yourself involved is:
- Keep your eyes, nose and mouth covered with protective gear if you’re working in a damaged house
- Wear protective gloves and keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth
- Keep children and household pets away from the damaged area
- If you know the house predates the ban on asbestos products, then call in an asbestos removal expert to help clear away any debris
