Over half a billion people will use mobile banking by 2013 reports Fonecast. This number is up from just over 300 million last year, according to a report by Juniper Research. The research suggests it will become a fundamental component of banks’ business strategies in the future.

Mobile banking is particularly likely to gain impetus in Western markets as consumers seek tighter control on their finances. However, the report warns that the most successful deployments of m-banking are likely to use applications, text messaging and browsers rather than being solely app focussed.

Sonia Lalli, the report’s author, said “Mobile Banking will be one of the greatest success stories of the mobile commerce industry over the next five years, as consumers observe the benefits of accessing banking services on the move. As customers become comfortable with undertaking basic banking functions on their mobiles, an increasing number will adopt transactional-based banking enabled by the enhanced functionality afforded by smart devices, exposed to an all-immersive consumer experience.”

Etihad named World's Leading Airline at the World Travel Awards

Etihad Airways has been named the World’s Leading Airline for the third year in a row at the World Travel awards in Doha, Qatar. It also picked up the World’s Leading First Class awards too. Full article in BreakingTravelNews

The recent acquisition of a 29.2% stake in airberlin has increased their exposure to an additional 33 million potential passengers on European routes is the latest event in a busy year for the airline.

Winds reached 165mph, schools were shut and transport chaos ensued as the worst storm in 25 years battered the north of Britain. The Daily Record got a look at the internal workings of the Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Control Centre.

A road accident in Lanark, a kids’ trampoline blowing away in Maryhill, Glasgow, a roof blown off a building in Motherwell, trees blocking a road in Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire – every few minutes another 999 call clocked up.

At one point, highly trained staff were coordinating 19 emergency response teams at once – but the atmosphere remained cool and calm.

Watch commander Marie-Claire Coyle briefly stepped away from her bank of three monitors to explain how her team were dealing with the extreme weather.

She said: “We have 2.5million people in the Strathclyde area – almost half the population of Scotland – and all the 999 calls come into this room.

“It can get very busy, but the people who work here are first class so we always manage.

As well as dealing with the volume of emergency calls coming into the centre, further difficulties arose as local authority staff were sent home.

“One of the problems today is that most of the local authorities have sent their workers home, so we have buildings that have been damaged and there is nobody tocall out to carry out emergency repairs. In these cases, we are having to do what we can on our own.”

You can’t help but admire the staff in centres like this across the globe, co-ordinating relief efforts whether it is a storm, earthquake, or other disaster.

According to this article, nearly 1 in 3 Brits do not have a savings account, whilst 40% spend money on things they want rather than saving it. Those that so save are putting away roughly £55 a month less than they did last year.

The main reason for this is the rising cost of living and high inflation outstripping pay rises for most of us. By the time we have paid our utility bills, mortgage/rent, food, phones and vehicular upkeep, there often isn’t very much left - in fact it is estimated that the typical British family needs to earn £24,600 a year just to break even.

So, check your bank statements to see what goes out when and you may find things you can cancel. such as unused gym membership or magazine subscriptions.

Asbestos Exposure Risk Following Earthquakes

A natural disaster such as an eartquake or tornado is devastating, but the long term health of those involved and emergency reponders, military personnel and anyone helping to pick up the pieces could be put further at risk due to exposure to asbestos. This is due to asbestos products becoming airborne and being inhaled, greatly increasing the chances of developing related diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer later in life. It is not known yet how many asbestos claims will be brought, but the health concerns are valid.

It doesn’t have to be a major natural event to cause damage to propery, the advice to stay safe if you find yourself involved is:

Keep your eyes, nose and mouth covered with protective gear if you’re working in a damaged house
Wear protective gloves and keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth
Keep children and household pets away from the damaged area
If you know the house predates the ban on asbestos products, then call in an asbestos removal expert to help clear away any debris
